Issues Repeat mammography.
Populations Women 40 and older in North Carolina.
Goals Encourage repeat mammography among women enrolled in a health plan.
Methods Tailored print. Computer tailored telephone counseling.
Clients University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and North Carolina State Employees Medical Plan.

Solution 1: Individually tailored reminders and booklets addressing mammography barriers and benefits.

Program participants receive a tailored mammogram reminder each year three months before they are due. Reminders are folded cards that are personalized and include contact information for their prior mammography center, information about breast cancer and mammograms, and appointment stickers for appointment books and calendars.

Participants who have not received a mammogram within two months after they were due receive a tailored priming letter. Priming letters are 4-page booklets that are personalized and include individually tailored information about the recipient's barriers to mammography, knowledge about breast cancer, and mammography. They are designed to promote thought about getting a mammogram, particularly benefits gained from getting a mammogram or lost from not getting a mammogram. Priming letters are tailored on multiple data points collected through surveys, counseling calls, and health records.

Both documents are designed to appeal to North Carolina women.

Solution 2: An Internet-based tailored counseling program for advisors assisting women with mammography decisions.

Program participants who have not received a mammogram within two months after they were due receive a priming letter followed by a tailored counseling call. A tailored counseling application was developed to manage and guide the contact and individually tailored counseling of women to overcome barriers to mammography and promote thought about getting a mammogram, particularly benefits gained from getting a mammogram or lost from not getting a mammogram. Counseling is tailored on multiple data points including barriers and mammogram dates.

The counseling application is internet-based and used via secure connection through a web browser
